December 29, 1923 - July 08, 2010

Clarence H. Mittelsteadt

SAVANNAH, GA - Clarence Mittelstaedt, 86, passed away Thursday, July 8, 2010. Clarence was son of the late August and Helene Mittelstaedt and was preceded in death by his beloved wife Hildegarde "Hilde" Wege Mittelstaedt. A native of Manawa, Wisconsin, Clarence was born and worked on the family farm until joining the United States Army in January of 1945. Following training at Fort Sheridan, Illinois and Fort Fannin, Texas, Clarence served his country in Okinawa and Korea and was honorably discharged from military service as a staff sergeant in December of 1946.

Clarence returned to his family farm with Hilde and daughter Faye. In 1956, Clarence accepted employment as a Soil Conservation Technician with the United States Department of Agriculture in Kewaunee, Wisconsin. Clarence tirelessly served the Wisconsin agricultural community for more than 40 years and was a true "conservationist" before the term was coined. Clarence and his wife were devout Lutherans, and when not working, they loved being together especially while fishing, gardening, and driving through the Wisconsin countryside on Sunday afternoons.

Survivors include daughter and husband, Faye and David Clark, Savannah, GA; grandchildren, Mathew and Denise McCoy, Savannah, GA, Ryan and Amy McCoy, Minneapolis, MN; great grandchildren, Jackson and Cash McCoy; sister, Eleanor Olson, Manawa, WI; brother and wife, Erv and Eileen Mittelstaedt, Manawa, WI.

Funeral services and interment will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 17th at the gravesite, Little Wolf Cemetery, with a lunch to follow at the Cedar Springs Golf Course.

GUEST BOOK

I began working with Clarence as a secretary in 1974. I worked with Clarence until he retired and left Kewaunee. I was a young kid when I started working with Clarence and had no prior experience. When he gave me jobs to do he took the time to explain, teach, and answer any questions. When I finished the jobs he gave me and they were done correctly he was proud like a father would be of his child. That attitude made me always want to do my best for him and gave me the confidence to believe I could handle anything in my job. After 36 years I am still with the office and in part I believe it is because of the confidence he gave me. He truly was like a father to the young people that worked with him. He guided, advised, and trained countless coworkers over many years. I believe anyone that worked with Clarence was blessed not only because of his work ethic but because of the example he set as a good, fair and decent person. Clarence I am going to miss you.

When you said the word gentlemen, Clarence would be the perfect model. He was kind, caring, loving, gentle, considerate, had a great laugh and smile and when he was up to something he had a twinkle in his blue eyes. We could not have asked for better neighbors. We have so many memories of Clarence and Hilde, they are too numerous to mention, but will always be in our hearts. I hope you are having pancakes. Rest in peace.

- Paul and Patti Walecka, Kewaunee, WI

You have my deepest sympathy in the loss of your father and grandfather. I worked with Clarence years ago in what was then known as the Land Conservation Dept. That man taught me more and gave me more confidence in myself and what I could learn and do than anyone I ever worked for. I have nothing but the greatest respect for him. He was a man of strong character and an extremely intelligent, hard-working person. My deepest sympathy to his family.

- Diane Nimmer, Kewaunee, WI

I remember being interviewed for employment with SCS back in the 1960's and coming away with the feeling I would really like to work with this man. Luckily I was hired and that began a learning experience of my life. Thank you Clarence for giving me the fine example of integrity and professionalism at a time I truly needed it. More Clarence Mittelstaedts would make for a much better world Thank you Tom Konop

Clarence was an outstanding person and conservationist. He was there for landowners, staff, and always willing to share his knowledge and experience with all. He left his tracks across the land and in many hearts. Thank you Clarence for all whom you shared your life with and god bless.

- Dave Gruber, Kewaunee, WI

My condolences to Faye and her family. We were good friends all throughout high school, and our families spent many happy hours together. Clarence was a very good man. He'll be in my prayers.

- Bill Marini, Hanover, IN

Clarence was a true professional Soil Conservation Service employee. He mentored and trained many often without adequate recognition for his teaching skill and for sharing his knowledge and wisdom with trainees. For that he was a blessing to many. God Bless, Keith

I met Larence and Hilde while working for UWEX in Kewaunee County. Clarence was an outstanding Soil Conservationist and provided me with a much better understanding of the relationship between a Farmer and his Land. Hilde cleaned big fish for my wife and we were always grateful for their assistance.

I knew Clarence many years, having grown up in Kew. & a member of Immanuel Lutheran. I got to know him better when I worked next door to Conservation Office. We’d take coffee breaks together, he worked hard, but you HAD to take one or he’d wheel you in on your office chair. We called him The Feisty Old Coot, he LOVED it. There was Pat, she and Clarence both had twinkly blue eyes. They loved to spar, you could see those blue eyes spark with delight when they’d get going. The rest of us would settle back & watch the show. I am very saddened to hear that Clarence has passed. Pat has also passed a few years ago. I just know those two are sparring again, blue eyes twinkling. Memories of Clarence will never be forgotten, I was truly blessed to know him. Our thoughts and prayers to family and friends. Now should I sign this with HIS nickname for me? There’s Trouble

Clarence was my mentor while I was in training in the Kewaunee Field Office early in my career. That knowledge supported me throughout my career and I'm forever grateful to Clarence. Clarence, Hilde and I would fish the river and Hilde and I picked many crawlers in the cemetary at night after a rain. My wife Mary and I have a very special place in our hearts for Clarence & Hilde.

- Vic Price, Fall Creek, WI

Clarence and Hilde were my foster parents. I loved them as if they were my own parents. I met them when I really need help and they did more for me than anyone would ever know. I know deep in my heart that they both knew just how much my I loved them. They also thought alot of my husband Lee. Our four boys were just like their own grandchildren. The boys always called them grandma and grandpa. They will be in our hearts forever.
